Enlighten your Blood Pressure

Nancy Bennett, MS, RD, CDE

High blood pressure has been referred to as the "silent killer." This is because it is the leading cause of stroke heart disease, kidney disease and yet it affects over 50 million Americans who don't even know they have it.

While most people know that excess sodium can lead to high blood pressure, did you know that adding calcium, magnesium and potassium to your diet help to lower high blood pressure? It's true!

Researchers have found that the "Dash" diet, or Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension, can help lower high blood pressure and it actually adds foods rather than taking them away. The "Dash" diet adds low-fat dairy foods, fruits and vegetables to one's daily fare.

See the suggestions below for an"enlightened" blood pressure.
